Forgotten Values, What A Man Should Be, Techy TV Show, and More

On Determination

From Pieces of the Action by Vannevar Bush:

"The success of any political system whatsoever depends upon the caliber of the men who rise through it and govern. We certainly have an absurd system. We elect presidents through a process that costs millions, and someone has to put up the millions. Still, by some mysterious process, able men rise. We obtain far better leaders than we deserve.
My conclusion is that things are not as bad as they seem. And from this I draw two thoughts.
The first is that we need a revival of the essence of the old pioneer spirit that conquered the forest and the plains, that looked at its difficulties with a steady eye, labored and fought, and left its thinking and its philosophy for later and quieter times. This is not to call for optimism; it is to call for determination."

If that doesn't get you fired up, I don't know what will.

3 Cool Things

Book I'm Absolutely Loving 📕
Pieces of the Action by Vannevar Bush

Put simply, I've never met someone with the character that Vannevar has, and it is absolutely what a man should be like. I think this should almost be required reading for young men because it paints a picture of responsibility and honor and optimism and care that just doesn't quite exist in today's media. I highly encourage you just to read the first chapter ("60 Years") to get an idea of what I'm talking about – read it here.

More Comments On Beast Games Season 2 ♟️

In the episode, "Would You Steal $1,000,000", I think the guy who took $250,000 right off the bat is... not smart. It puts a target on your back in social-based games – you basically just took yourself out of the game if you take anything more than your fair share. I think there is a lot to be learned from watching the social aspect of Beast Games. In the most recent episode, the girl making a run for votes by giving up all of her money through bribes is another really interesting lesson with parallels to life/business.

TV Show I'm Just Now Getting Around To 📺
Silicon Valley

I've never been able to watch this in the past because everything hit too close to home. At this point, I think I'm well enough removed from the tech stereotype that I can watch it and laugh. (I'm unsure what the implications are that I couldn't watch it before.)

Yes, I've mentioned this person three times in this week's newsletter because I think he is that important of a character. Look into him. Read chapter 1 of Pieces of the Action.
